Super Day for Special Kids”

The Lewis Cass Intermediate School District (LCISD), Cass County Tractor Pullers and community members sponsors a day of horse-drawn hay rides, pedal cars, barrel train rides, an ambulance, fire trucks, and race cars for children and students of Brookside Learning Center (BLC), as well as other school programs throughout the county. This event got its beginning back in 1994 when members from the Cass County Tractors Pullers Association discovered that many of the Special Education Children often were unable to attend the Fair & Shows. The Association agreed to replicate some of the activities for the children that would go on at some of these fairs and shows in the county at no charge to the schools, children or their families. This fun filled day is held the last Wednesday of May every year. It is an excellent day and the kids, teachers, and parents enjoy seeing all of the equipment and the various activities that go on outside the Brookside Learning Center.

We believe that it is important to create an opportunity for children to have hands on experiences with activities that typically are part of fairs and shows. Also to provide community members, agencies, etc. an opportunity to share with children their role in the community, interests and hobbies. This encourages community and education partnerships.

On this day the children will be able to participate in awareness and demonstration activities with agencies such as Police Department, Fire Station, Cass County Road Commission and other community members who set up their vehicles and/or exhibits. In addition to the exhibits, the children will have an opportunity to ride a mini barrel train, horse drawn wagons, pedal cars, sit upon tractors that work and have a free lunch with exhibitors.

Fire trucks, air horns, and small children are something interesting to behold. The children enjoy pulling on the air horns and then gleefully holding their ears at the sound, before pulling on the rope again. They also enjoy climbing all over and through the fire trucks and even get a chance to try on the fireman’s helmet and jacket. They’re always amazed that they are so heavy.

Of course the ‘Race Car’ always seems to gather the attention of young and old alike. There is something about driving fast, with the wind in your face that is exciting to many. There are always the conversations about the power of the engine, or the difficulty getting parts to fit, etc. That one can overhear as they look at the cars. The kids just want to sit in the seat and pretend to “drive’ their car in the big race. Isn’t imagination wonderful?

Thank you Lewis Cass I.S.D., Cass County Tractor Pullers, and Community members every year for a great day!
